5-Day Itinerary for Edinburgh: Explore the Best of Scotland’s Capital

Picture of Ross Fountain and Edinburgh Castle from Princes Street Garden

Edinburgh: The city that stole my heart (and I know will steal yours too) 🏰 🩵

Scotland’s capital is an absolute dream—full of medieval charm, striking architecture, rich history, and a buzzing energy that’s impossible to ignore.

Whether you're wandering the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed Royal Mile, taking in the views from Edinburgh Castle (yep, it’s literally sitting on an extinct volcano!), or visiting the regal Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh knows how to leave a lasting impression.

My own love story with this city started back in 2015 on a quick trip with my best friends. Two days in Edinburgh was nowhere near enough, so I planned to return in 2020… but then COVID said nope. Silver lining? The delayed trip turned into a two-week Scotland adventure—from the rugged Highlands to the dreamy Isle of Skye, capped off with a magical week in Edinburgh. (You can read more about that journey here!) And yes—I was lucky enough to visit again in July 2024!

If you're planning a trip to Edinburgh or just daydreaming for now, I’m so excited to share my 5-day itinerary packed with top sights, hidden gems, and plenty of personal tips. Let’s uncover the magic of Edinburgh together. ✨

Before You Go: What to Know About This Itinerary

  • Buy Tickets Ahead: For popular spots like Edinburgh Castle or The Real Mary Kings Close, booking tickets ahead is a huge win—not only do you secure your spot, but you often save a few pounds too. If your schedule’s set, go ahead and lock those in early!

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: Edinburgh is super walkable, but those charming cobblestone streets (and sneaky hills) will definitely test your feet. Bring your most comfortable shoes—you’ll thank me later.

  • Vegan Finds: I’ve included vegan-friendly food stops throughout this itinerary, but do a quick check before heading out—unfortunately, some spots have closed recently. Sad face, I know. 😢

  • Weather: Edinburgh weather is a total wildcard. During my trips in May, June, and July, we got lucky with mostly sunny days, but there were definitely surprise showers. Bring a light waterproof jacket, maybe an umbrella, and you’ll be ready to keep exploring rain or shine!

Now, let's dive into the perfect five-day itinerary for Edinburgh!

Overview of Itinerary:

DAY ONE: Explore the Royal Mile
