Scottish Highlands Dreams Road Trip: A 7-Day Adventure Through the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye

Are you ready to adventure on a journey through one of the most unreal landscapes on Earth? (I might be biased, but this is my blog so I’m allowed to be.😇)

Anyways… you better be ready, because we are heading into the Scottish Highlands and The Isle of Skye; one of my favorite places!

The Scottish Highlands are known for their breathtaking scenery, rich history / folklore, and vibrant culture. Here, rugged mountains, rolling hills, and stunning lochs create an incredible backdrop filled with wildlife and natural wonders.

And if that wasn’t enough, the insanely beautiful Isle of Skye also awaits, offering a treasure trove of natural beauty that enchants travelers from around the world. With its awe-inspiring views at every corner, Skye promises an unforgettable adventure for anyone exploring Scotland.

Exploring these regions offers opportunities to visit ancient castles and ruins, hike through stunning landscapes, or unwind with a pint in a cozy pub. Whether your passion lies in nature, history, or culture, there's something here for everyone to enjoy!

The journey through the highlands to reach Skye is nothing short of magical— as you navigate the winding roads, take your time and drive safely to fully savor the beauty of this country.

With all of that said, in this itinerary, I will guide you through the best ways to spend your time road tripping around the highlands, including the enchanting Isle of Skye!

Things to Note About this Itinerary:

  • Snacks and Car Travel: Make sure to bring snacks for the road to avoid getting hangry before you make it to your next stop!

  • Starting and Ending Points: This itinerary begins in Glasgow and concludes in Edinburgh, offering a comprehensive journey through Scotland's highlights. However, you can do this backward or leave and come back through either of these cities!

  • Road Realities (specifically for Isle of Skye): The main road, A87, connects the peninsulas, but closures can mean detours.

  • Hiking: There are opportunities for hiking included in this itinerary, offering a chance to explore the stunning natural landscapes. However, hiking is optional at most of these locations. So, when planning and timing your activities, consider the hiking options based on your group's preferences and fitness levels. Although we didn’t experience any when we were here, the summer months can bring midges (a small fly like a mosquito) so be prepared for those!

Things to Note about Scotland:

  • Weather Preparedness: Scotland's weather can be unpredictable. While we experienced mostly beautiful days in May, occasional rain showers occurred. Ensure you have waterproof attire handy and most of the time it passed within a few minutes!

  • Parking: Expect to pay for parking in most places; card payment is typically accepted, however it is always good to carry some coins as a few locations may require them.

  • Safety: Scotland is generally safe, and leaving belongings in the car posed no issues during our trips.

  • Driving Reminders:

    • Remember to drive on the left side of the road in Scotland. If you're not accustomed to this, consider renting an automatic car for ease of navigation.

    • On one track roads there will be pull-offs every few miles, remember that you have the right of way when the pull-off is on the right side, ensuring smooth traffic flow and safe passage.

    • For those from America (or somewhere not used to this), Scotland has a lot of roundabouts and some of them are large, so be sure to review the rules for navigating them.

  • Friendly Locals: Scots are known for their friendliness and helpfulness, making your journey more enjoyable and after experiencing this country multiple times I can confirm that this is true!

  • Favorite Destination: Scotland remains one of my favorite places, offering incredible experiences and breathtaking landscapes. I have been here 3 times so far and have no plans to stop visiting whenever I can!

  • Best Time to Visit: I personally thought May was incredible! I have been in June and July with about the same kind of weather, but there were definitely less people in May. I would say to steer away from going into the Highlands during winter as most things are closed for the season and there isn’t as much daylight. I would also recommend to not go during August unless you are specifically wanting to see the Fringe Festival.

  • Vegan Options: Vegan dining options are surprisingly plentiful throughout the Highlands. The UK often labels vegan items clearly, simplifying snack stops and meal choices for vegan travelers!

I can't wait to share this incredible itinerary, so let's get into it!

Overview of Itinerary:

DAY ONE: Glasgow to Fort William

Leave from Glasgow early and have a hearty breakfast before heading out as there will be many incredible stops on the way to Fort William!

Stop in Luss: Luss is a picturesque village nestled along Loch Lomond. Its charming stone cottages and lush greenery make it a delightful stop for a leisurely stroll and some scenic views.

Loch Lomond Faerie Trail: Take a whimsical adventure along the Loch Lomond Faerie Trail. Despite clearly being geared more for children, it is still a fun experience for adults too as it brings out your inner child! Begin by parking at the Luss South car park and purchasing tickets at the trailer. You'll receive a booklet with a map and clues that lead to a hidden message at the end (we forgot about it halfway through so I don’t know what it was 😅). As you follow the trail through woods, keep an eye out for fairy-themed treasures like fairy houses, magical mushrooms, and enchanting fairy wishes. The trail ends at the historic Luss Parish Church.

Personal Note: I originally just wanted to stop in Luss to admire the village's beauty, but we discovered the Faerie Trail once we got there. It added a touch of magic to our journey and also got us out of the car for an extended period of time!

Luss Parish Church: After completing the Faerie Trail, take time to explore Luss Parish Church and its surroundings.

Afterwards, wander around the village streets, enjoy views from the pier, and recharge with a delicious lunch before continuing your road trip adventure!

DAY TWO: Fort William to Portree

Glenfinnan Viaduct/Jacobite Steam Train: Experience the enchantment of the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, also known as the route of the iconic Jacobite Steam Train, and also known as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. This historic railway journey winds its way to the dramatic crossing over the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Don't miss the chance to capture this magical moment and immerse yourself in a touch of wizarding world wonder.

Very Important Note: If you want to see the train pass by, be sure to check the train's departure times from Fort William on the Jacobite Steam Train’s website (link here). The train journey to Glenfinnan Viaduct takes about 35 minutes. Plan to arrive early as the area can get crowded, even in poor weather. Also be sure to keep in mind that it is closed during winter months.

The walk from the parking lot to the viewpoint takes about 15 minutes and is relatively easy, but wearing durable shoes is advisable due to rocky terrain, and particularly when it's raining as it can get muddy. Both times I have gone, it was raining and muddy; still very much worth it, but just something to keep in mind.

Estimated Time Here: 30 minutes - 1.5 hours (depending on how early you get to the viewpoint)

Glenfinnan Monument and Loch Shiel: After watching the train go by, take a short walk across the street to admire the Glenfinnan Monument and enjoy views of Loch Shiel, a location also featured in Harry Potter scenes.

There is also another viewpoint that you can walk up that is next to the guest shop!

Estimated Time Here: 5 - 10 minutes

Saint Mary & Saint Finnan Church: Located just a short distance down the road from the Glenfinnan Monument, Saint Mary & Saint Finnan Church offers a peaceful spot to visit, showcasing traditional Scottish craftsmanship and providing a moment of tranquility amidst your Highland adventure and more views of Loch Shiel.

Estimated Time Here:
10 - 15 minutes

Head back to Fort William for a quick lunch, refuel your vehicle, and grab any snacks for the road ahead!

Personal Note: I would suggest stopping at Aldi in Fort William to get something for breakfast in Isle of Skye, especially if you are up early to start the day as some places aren’t open very early for breakfast or if you aren’t staying near Portree. It would also be good to have snacks on hand for driving around Isle of Skye so you don’t get hangry!

Loch Lochy: Take a brief stop at Loch Lochy to appreciate the serene Highland beauty.

Estimated Time Here: 10-15 min

Clachan Duich Burial Ground: Explore the hauntingly beautiful Clachan Duich Burial Ground surrounded by the Highland mountains.

Estimated Time Here: 15 - 30 minutes (or longer if you want to take more time looking at the tombstones)

Eilean Donan Castle: Perched on a small island where three lochs meet, Eilean Donan Castle is a Scottish icon steeped in history and breathtaking beauty is like a scene straight out of a fairy tale. Explore the fully restored interior, wander through the castle's rooms with panoramic views of the surrounding lochs, and marvel at the architecture that has stood the test of time.

Personal Note: You can buy tickets to just tour the outside of the castle or inside. I personally think it is worth getting the option to tour the inside if you’re already buying a ticket! You do also have to pay for parking here and it does accept card!

Estimated Time Here: 1 - 1.5 hours

Now onto the Isle of Skye!

On your way into the Isle of Skye, make your first stop at the Old Sligachan Bridge. This quaint footbridge is steeped in folklore and offers a charming glimpse into Skye's mystical allure makes for an enchanting stop.

Old Sligachan Bridge: This old footbridge spans a gentle river, framed by the majestic Skye mountains. Legend has it that the river is a portal to the faerie realm. Fairy Pools: Embark on an enchanting journey to the Fairy Pools, where crystal-clear waters cascade through a series of natural rock pools, set against the backdrop of the rugged Cuillin Mountains. Though weather can impact accessibility, when conditions are favorable, it's a magical experience.

Personal Note: While we were there, recent rain had swelled the water levels, making hiking unsafe, so we were unable to do this. I have heard it is an easy walk and although the Fairy Pools aren’t as extravagant as everyone claims, it still has the magic of Scotland!

Personal Note: Although this was in our set in Google Maps, the maps did take us a way that we were not able to access the beach, so I would be sure to research how to access this beach before heading out. Isle of Skye’s website talks about the city it is in and the parking lot which I did not know until after we had already tried to go here.

Whether you're capturing stunning sunset hues or witnessing the raw power of crashing waves, Neist Point Lighthouse is a photographer's dream and a testament to Skye's untamed beauty.

Personal Note: For full transparency, the first time we came out here, it was so foggy we could hardly see 20 feet in front of us, so we came back the next day and had better results! See the difference in the picture below with my husband!

Estimated Time Here: 30 minutes - 1.5 hours

Wrap up your day of exploration by heading back to Portree for a relaxing evening, preparing another exciting adventure tomorrow!

As you wander through this whimsical terrain, keep an eye out for Castle Ewen, a natural rock formation resembling a castle. Legend has it that fairies dwell within these mystical surroundings, adding an extra touch of enchantment to your visit. Take your time to soak in the ethereal beauty and let your imagination wander in this fairy-tale setting. It’s a perfect way to bid farewell to the Isle of Skye on a magical note!

Estimated Time Here: 1 hour

After a day packed with adventures, return to Portree for a well-deserved dinner and night's rest!

Throughout the caslte, there is informative signage throughout that offers insights into the castle's past, complemented by picturesque views of Loch Ness and providing ample opportunities for Nessie spotting! 👀

Estimated Time Here: 1 hour

Please note the upcoming destination is Dunrobin Castle, situated beyond Inverness.

However, if you would prefer to proceed directly to Inverness without visiting Dunrobin, here are some more activities you can enjoy in Inverness:
