Last Updated: August 2026

Edinburgh: The city that stole my heart (and I know will steal yours too) 🏰 🩵

Scotland's capital is an absolute dream—full of medieval charm, striking architecture, rich history, and a buzzing energy that's impossible to ignore.

Whether you're wandering the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed Royal Mile, taking in views from Edinburgh Castle (yep, it's literally sitting on an extinct volcano!), or visiting the regal Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh knows how to leave a lasting impression.

My own love story with this city started back in 2015 on a quick trip with my best friends. Two days was nowhere near enough, so I planned to return in 2020… but then COVID said nope. Silver lining? The delayed trip turned into a two-week Scotland adventure—rugged Highlands, dreamy Isle of Skye, and a magical week back in Edinburgh. (You can read more about that trip here!) I was lucky enough to return again in July 2024, and this itinerary pulls from all of it.

Here's my 6 day breakdown of Edinburgh's top sights, hidden gems, and vegan-friendly stops. Let's uncover the magic together. ✨

Before You Go: What to Know About This Itinerary

  • Buy Tickets Ahead: For popular spots like Edinburgh Castle or The Real Mary Kings Close, booking tickets ahead is a huge win—not only do you secure your spot, but you often save a few pounds too. If your schedule’s set, go ahead and lock those in early!

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: Edinburgh is super walkable, but those charming cobblestone streets (and sneaky hills) will definitely test your feet. Bring your most comfortable shoes—you’ll thank me later.

  • Vegan Finds: I’ve included vegan-friendly food stops throughout this itinerary, but do a quick check before heading out—unfortunately, some spots have closed recently. Sad face, I know. 😢

  • Weather: Edinburgh weather is a total wildcard. During my trips in May, June, and July, we got lucky with mostly sunny days, but there were definitely surprise showers. Bring a light waterproof jacket, maybe an umbrella, and you’ll be ready to keep exploring rain or shine!

Now, let's dive into the perfect five-day itinerary for Edinburgh!

Overview of Itinerary:

DAY ONE: Explore the Royal Mile

Picture of red telephone booth off Royal mile

Let’s kick this Edinburgh adventure with a deep dive into the city's heart—the Royal Mile. This historic stretch is packed with iconic landmarks, charming shops, cozy pubs, and hidden gems around every corner. Trust me, you could spend days just wandering here.

Edinburgh Castle

🕐 Estimated Time: 2 - 3 hours, especially if you are a huge history buff and want to make sure you have time to read every plaque!

Start at the very tippy top of the Royal Mile with a visit to Edinburgh Castle, Scotland’s crown jewel—literally. Sitting proudly atop Castle Rock, this ancient fortress has seen it all: royal coronations, battles, sieges, and centuries of history.

Inside, you’ll find highlights like the Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the grand Great Hall, and St. Margaret’s Chapel (the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh!). Oh—and the panoramic views from the top? Unreal.

🎟 Be sure to buy tickets ahead of time through the castle’s official website.

As you descend along the Royal Mile, be sure to explore:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6 days enough for Edinburgh?
Yes! 6 days gives you time to see the major sights (Royal Mile, Old Town, New Town) at a relaxed pace, plus a full extra day to venture into the Highlands or dive deeper into museums. If you're tighter on time, you could trim this down to 4-5 days and combine some of the walking-based stops, but I wouldn't go much shorter than that. Edinburgh has SO much to offer!

What's the best time of year to visit Edinburgh?
I've been in May, June, July AND December! All three were great— during the summer months it was mostly sunny with the occasional surprise shower (bring that light rain jacket!). Late April/early May is also when the cherry blossoms bloom in The Meadows, if you want to try to catch those. Of course, winter is a bit more wet, darker and gray but that just feeds into the Gothic vibes!

Is Edinburgh walkable?
Very! Almost everything in this itinerary is walkable! Although the cobblestones and hills will test your feet, so Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.

Is it easy to eat vegan in Edinburgh?
Oh my gods, yes!! Edinburgh has a solid vegan food scene, and I've included specific vegan-friendly spots throughout each day of this itinerary. Just double check hours/status before you go, since spots do close.

Do I need to book tickets in advance?
For popular spots like Edinburgh Castle and The Real Mary King's Close, yes—book ahead. It secures your spot and sometimes saves you a few pounds too.
