5 Days in New England: The Ultimate Fall Foliage Road Trip Itinerary

There’s just something about New England in the fall that feels like stepping into a postcard — crunchy leaves, cozy towns, and all the Gilmore Girls vibes! 🍁🍂

Honestly, at times it felt like wandering through the real-life version of Stars Hollow!

Here’s my 5-day itinerary that’ll take you through Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts! 🚘

Before You Go: What to Know About This Itinerary

  • Stay: You’ll be staying in a different place each night. Most of the driving happens at the end of your day, so you can wake up ready to explore.

  • Accommodations: Things book up FAST in fall — seriously, like, “blink and they’re gone” fast. Try to book at least 6 months ahead — I’m serious!

  • Vegan Finds: I’ve listed vegan-friendly options in each area, but road trip rule #1: stock up on snacks to avoid hanger!

  • Weather: New England weather is moody. When we went, it was warmer and humid (not the crisp fall vibes I imagined), and then a week later they got snow. Be ready for anything.

  • Timing: “Peak foliage” is a moving target. We went the first week of October and it wasn’t quite at its brightest yet. Still gorgeous, but don’t be surprised if Instagram filters are doing some of the heavy lifting you see online.

  • Foliage Map: You can stalk the colors in real-time with the official map → Fall Foliage Map

  • Hikes: All the hikes on this trip are easy — more like nature walks than full-on treks. This is a chill fall vibes trip, not a “sweat and scramble” one.

Overview of Itinerary:

DAY ONE: Fly into Portland, Maine → Drive to Bar Harbor

🚘 Drive Time: 3 - 3.5 hours

Rent your car at the airport and head straight for Bar Harbor; a charming little town right outside Acadia National Park and where you will be saying!

However, the drive is kind of long and if you had to take multiple flights here you might be hungry so make sure to eat before you start your drive!

We stopped at Elevation Burger which was right near the airport and had vegan burgers! 😋

Once you’re there, wander the streets, pop into shops, and grab dinner at a cozy spot!

🌱 Vegan Options in Bar Harbor:

  • Cottage St. Ramen

  • A Slice of Eden

  • Jeannie’s Great Maine Breakfast

  • Choco-Latte Cafe

DAY TWO: Acadia National Park 🍁

Start your morning with breakfast in Bar Harbor!

After breakfast (or while waiting for your table), you can walk around for a little bit to explore the town before heading to your first stop and before the town wakes up!

Wild Gardens of Acadia

🕐 Estimated Time: 30 - 45 minutes

A peaceful garden area that showcases over 300 native plant species. It’s like getting a mini tour of Maine’s ecosystems without leaving the path.

Ocean Path Trailhead (Starts at Sand Beach)

🕐 Estimated Time: 45 min - 2 hours (depending if you want to do the whole trail)

One of the park’s most popular trails, running 4.5 miles out and back along the coast. Expect stunning ocean views, rocky cliffs, and plenty of photo ops. Takes around 1.5 - 2 hours if you want to do the whole thing as you can take this to walk to the next stops, but it’s flat and easy!

📝Personal Note: We just walked down for a little bit and then turned around and drove to the next stops.

Thunder Hole

🕐 Estimated Time:: 30 min - 1 hour

When the waves crash just right, this natural inlet makes a booming sound and sprays water high into the air. Very “nature’s water show.”

You will want to be here at high tide if you want to be able to hear it! You can check out this site here to see when the high tide will be for the day!

Otter Point

🕐 Estimated Time: 45 min

A rocky overlook with sweeping ocean views and a chance to spot seabirds. A quieter spot than Thunder Hole, but just as magical!

Bass Harbor Head Light Station

🕐 Estimated Time: 30 - 45 minutes

One of the most photographed spots in Acadia (and for good reason). This historic lighthouse sits dramatically on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean. Go at sunset if you can — the sky lights up behind the lighthouse and it’s pure New England magic. Just note parking is limited, so go early or be ready to wait a bit.

Cadillac Mountain Overlook

🕐 Estimated Time: 45 minutes - 1 hour

The crown jewel of Acadia. From the summit, you’ll see sweeping views of the islands and ocean, but heads up, you need a reservation for vehicle access. This is also THE spot to see the sunrise as this is the first spot in the United States to see the sunrise. 🌅

After your day in Acadia, drive to Augusta (or somewhere near by), Maine for an overnight stop (it’s halfway to tomorrow’s destination).

🚘 Drive Time from Acadia to Augusta: 2.5 hours

DAY THREE: White Mountains → Stowe → Woodstock

🚘 Drive Time from Augusta to Saco Ranger Station: 2 hours

Saco Ranger Station

🕐 Estimated Time: 10 - 15 minutes

A good place to start your journey into the White Mountain National Forest on Kancamagus Highway. Grab a map and some informative pamphlets, ask the rangers any questions, refill water bottles, and take a bathroom break before hitting the scenic drive!

Albany Covered Bridge

🕐 Estimated Time: 30 minutes

A picture-perfect covered bridge built in the 1850s. Super charming and a very New England photo stop.

📝Personal Note: It will be busy with people. For full transparency, I edited them out of my pictures!

Lower Falls

🕐 Estimated Time: 30 - 45 minutes

A beautiful, easily accessible waterfall and swimming area (though probably too chilly in fall). Great spot for photos or just a quick stop to stretch your legs.

Next stop: Stowe, Vermont! But enjoy all the views on the way there!

Drive along the Kancamagus Hwy to keep taking in the views and stopping anywhere else a long the way. Parking can be tough at some stops, so sometimes it’s better to enjoy the drive itself — there are plenty of pull-offs for mountain and forest views.

🚘 Drive Time from Kancamagus Hwy to Stowe: About 2.5 hours

Stowe Community Church Viewpoint

🕐 Estimated Time: 10 minutes

This is the iconic white church with the mountains as a backdrop. Basically, the postcard of Vermont.

🌱 Vegan Options in Stowe:

  • Woodland Baking and Coffee

  • Ranch Camp Stowe (This is conveniently right behind the Stowe Community Church Viewpoint)

  • Green Goddess Cafe

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

🕐 Estimated Time: 30 min - 1 hour

A must for apple cider, cider donuts, and Vermont-made goodies. They even have hard cider tastings if you’re feeling festive.

For my fellow vegans, unfortunately the donuts are not vegan. 😭

📝Personal Note: We did not get to stop here due to the amount of traffic we were in so keep that in mind during this time of year!

Ben & Jerry’s Factory

🕐 Estimated Time: 30 min - 1 hour

Ice cream lovers, this is your spot. You can tour the factory and grab a cone… though fair warning, the line is often long.

Then head to Woodstock, VT to stay for the night (not to be confused with Woodstock, NH or Woodstock, NY😅).

DAY FOUR: Woodstock → Boston

Woodstock

🕐 Estimated Time: 2 -3 hours

One of the cutest small towns in New England (and that’s saying a lot). It’s full of historic inns, boutique shops, and covered bridges. Highly recommend getting there early to enjoy the town before the crowds roll in. We got breakfast, wandered around, and by 10:30 the town was packed.

Riverside Cemetery in Queeche

🕐 Estimated Time: 15 - 30 minutes

A peaceful, historic cemetery tucked right along the Ottauquechee River. In the fall, the headstones are framed by fiery foliage and rolling hills, making it feel straight out of a storybook. It’s quiet, reflective, and honestly one of those “hidden gem” places that feels magical when the leaves are at their peak.

📝Personal Note: We actually stopped here on the way to Woodstock as we had stayed a bit out of the town and when we went it was very moody and perfect! Definitley was giving more of the ✨hoa hoa hoa✨ vibes rather than 🍂 la la la 🍂 vibes (iykyk)

Then drive into Boston and make any more stops you want a long the way or head straight there to explore!

🌱 Vegan Options in Woodstock:

  • Mon Vert Cafe (get here early!)

  • Soulfully Good Cafe

🚘 Drive Time from Woodstock to Boston: 2.5 hours

Once you’re in Boston, grab a bite to eat before exploring the city!

Granary Burying Ground

🕐 Estimated Time: 30 minutes

A historic cemetery where famous figures like Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams are buried.

Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum

🕐 Estimated Time: 15 minutes (unless you do the tour)

An interactive experience where you can literally toss tea into the harbor like it’s 1773. Fun and educational!

Paul Revere House

🕐 Estimated Time: 1 hour if you go inside

The actual home of the midnight rider himself. It’s small but interesting, and very popular, so book ahead if you want to go inside.

🌱 Vegan Options in Boston:

  • Cafe Bonjour

  • FoMu

  • Donut Villa

  • Saus Boston

Alternative Option: If you don’t want to explore Boston (or you already have), head to Salem instead (only an hour away from Boston)!

Especially if you’ve got a later flight the next day and can stay in Salem for the night instead — or better yet, an extra day to play with. Salem in the fall is peak spooky-cute New England, and I’ve got a full Salem itinerary you can check out here.

DAY FIVE: Fly out of Boston

Depending on your flight time, you could squeeze in a coffee walk along the Freedom Trail before heading to the airport.

✨ That’s your 5-day New England fall road trip — cozy towns, history, and foliage that’ll make you want to curl up with a giant cup of coffee and talk way too fast.

Until next adventure! ✈
